Your first appointment will last approximately one hour and consist of taking your medical history, carrying out a clinical examination including any relevant orthopedic tests and receiving treatment for the condition if needed.
Your medical history
Before your treatment, we need to make a full medical assessment of your condition. We will ask you questions about your medical history and any illnesses or injuries you may have experienced over the years. It is very useful if you can bring along a list of any prescribed medicines you are currently taking.
Your blood pressure will be taken and we may need to carry out other clinical tests if relevant to your condition.
To carry out an examination you may be required to undress to your underwear, so please wear something you are comfortable with. A gown can be provided if you prefer.
Your posture will be assessed and you may need to perform a range of movements to help us identify areas of restricted movement.
Osteopaths also use palpation to help diagnose areas of dysfunction in your body.
Osteopaths use a wide range of gentle manipulations, depending on your age, fitness and diagnosis.
Treatment is different for every patient but may include techniques such as:
- Soft tissue massage
- Joint articulation
- Muscle stretches
We may also suggest exercises and stretching routines to be carried out at home to improve your posture and movement.
Follow up appointment
Follow up appointments may be needed to treat your condition, these will take approximately 45 minutes as your full medical history is only required on your first appointment.
Osteopaths aim to treat most conditions within 3 to 4 sessions however some patients benefit from maintenance treatments spaced out through the year.
